III. Objectives
Students will practice a role assigned to them in a reader’s theater script until they can read it with correct emotion, tone, and improved fluency.
IV. Materials needed
Script (Carla and the greedy merchant)
or book from library
V. Lesson Outline
A. Motivation– 2-3 min.
Introduce the script and assign parts.
B. Development of the Concept or Skill 5 min. / 15-20 min. –
Have the students practice their parts – encourage them to read with enthusiasm and emotion. Have them read it to themselves once or twice, and them practice with each other.
C. Conclusion (Application Activity or AFTER) – 5 -7 min.
Once they have practiced on their own and then together, they will present their script.
D. Evaluation of Learning (ASSESSMENT) – Do students show improvement in fluency?

Students will learn that they read in different ‘gears” for different purposes and practice “changing gears”
IV. Materials needed
Picture book at a well-matched reading level for students.
V. Lesson Outline
A. Motivation– 2-3 min.
Introduce the concept that different “gears” or speeds are used to read for different purposes.
1st gear – slowest and most powerful – memorize material
2nd gear – to learn material
3rd gear – for most of our reading
4th gear – quickest speed for skimming and scanning
B. Development of the Concept or Skill 5 min. / 15-20 min. –
Ask – What gear might you use? – for different types of texts
What gear do you normally use while reading?
Model the technique of switching gears.
C. Conclusion (Application Activity or AFTER) – 5 -7 min.
Once you have explained and modeled this technique of choosing which gear to use and of switching gears, students will take turns practicing this technique with a read-aloud and later in their independent reading.
